1946-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Four independent die attributions on a single coin make DDO-001 the standout multi-attribution variety of the 1946-S Roosevelt Dime — itself the first year of the Roosevelt Dime series. The obverse is listed as DDO-001 and ODV-001; the reverse independently as DDR-007; the mintmark as RPM-015 (also RPM-0015); and the mintmark style as MMS-001 (Trumpet Tail). Obverse doubling presents as a medium spread on LIBERTY, the nose, forehead, and hair top of the head, with light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the designer's initials. Catalogued UVC-097 and DMR-005, three die stages are documented: Stage A (very early die state, EMDS) carries a die gouge on the back of the neck, with the reverse simultaneously listed as DDR-007 and RPM-015 and reverse die gouges on the N of UNUM and east from the lower right olive stem; Stage B (mid die state); Stage C (late die state). The 1946-S Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver at the San Francisco Mint under John R. Sinnock's design, issued to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in 1945. The combination of DDO, DDR, RPM, MMS, and ODV attributions on a single die pair has few parallels in the Roosevelt Dime series.
