Description

Clockwise spread visible on STATES OF AMERICA, the RIBUS portion of PLURIBUS, and UNUM characterizes this third cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1946 Washington Quarter — the first full post-war production year after World War II coinage restrictions ended. The clockwise rotational doubling indicates the hub shifted rotationally between impressions during die manufacture, producing design elements that appear to shadow or trail in one consistent direction. Detailed die markers aid authentication: on the obverse, several die scratches run northwest from the front of Washington's neck, while additional die scratches running parallel to the rim pass through the lower LIBE portion of LIBERTY. The reverse carries its own diagnostics, with die scratches running parallel to the rim through the upper right wing area. These die markers remain constant across all specimens struck from this die, distinguishing genuine hub doubling from machine doubling or die deterioration effects.
