1945-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-007
Error
Description
Light spread on the ERTY of LIBERTY characterizes the 1945-S Washington Quarter DDO-007, a wartime silver quarter with an additional point of interest: the reverse is identified as MMS-002, the "Trumpet Tail" misplaced mint mark variant. Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-0575 with die marriage DMR-021, this variety progresses from EDS (unconfirmed) through Stage B where numerous north-south die scratches appear on the obverse at mid die state, to LDS (unconfirmed). The pairing of a doubled die obverse with a misplaced mint mark reverse creates a dual-interest variety — the obverse carries hub doubling while the reverse exhibits a separately cataloged mint mark anomaly. The 1945-S Washington Quarter was struck at San Francisco in 90% silver during the final year of World War II, and the Trumpet Tail designation refers to a distinctive tail shape on the S mint mark that resulted from the specific punch used on this reverse die.
