1945-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Carrying the DDO-001 designation as the primary doubled die obverse for the date, the 1945-S is a silver Washington quarter from the San Francisco Mint cataloged as UVC-0568 DMR-003 in the VarietyVista system. This variety exhibits medium spread to the north on IN GOD WE TRUST with light spread on the nostril and eyelid, placing the doubling on both text and portrait elements. Three die stages document its production life. Stage A, the early die state, is unconfirmed. Stage B places both obverse and reverse at mid-die state. Stage C, the late die state, shows a die crack across the forehead and hair on the obverse with a light die crack across the bust, while the reverse develops a die crack down the eagle's right wing and another from the S of PLURIBUS to the wing under AME of AMERICA. The reverse of this die marriage is designated MMS-004 with a ball serif mintmark style, a classification that identifies the specific mintmark punch used on this working die. The medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the portrait doubling on the nostril and eyelid make this one of the more visually accessible doubled die obverses among wartime San Francisco quarters.
