Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista, this San Francisco wartime Jefferson Nickel from 1945 carries a repunched S mintmark with an unusual die state anomaly. Die markers: UVC-520, DMR-040. Stage A: EDS (unconfirmed). Stage B: Reverse is MDS; strong die crack in hair — VLDS. Stage C: LDS (unconfirmed). The obverse reaching VLDS (very late die state) with a strong hair crack while the reverse remains at MDS documents severe asymmetric deterioration, with the obverse approaching terminal failure while still paired with a mid-life reverse. Struck at San Francisco in the wartime silver alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese (5.0 g, 21.21 mm), the oversized S above Monticello was part of the wartime design mandated for public identification of the silver-content composition.
