1945-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006

Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as CONECA DDR-001/RPM#9, this 1945-S wartime silver alloy Jefferson Nickel WDDR-006 presents Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with strong spread toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, increasing in magnitude from left to right across the motto. This variety is part of a die marriage also listed as 1945-S 5c WRPM-008 with an S/S East repunched mintmark, meaning both a doubled die reverse and repunched mintmark exist on the same die pair, adding significant collecting value. Obverse die markers include heavy die scratches below Jefferson's chin and a slanted die scratch between the upper L and I of LIBERTY. On the reverse, an almost vertical die scratch appears below and between the S of PLURIBUS and the first U of UNUM. The pairing of a strong Class II doubled die reverse with a repunched mintmark on the same die makes WDDR-006 a dual-attribution variety, prized by collectors who seek coins exhibiting multiple die anomalies from a single striking.
