Description
An S/S West variety from the San Francisco Mint, this VarietyVista-documented 1945-S wartime silver Jefferson Nickel RPM-035 awaits specimen submission for new color digital photographs. Die markers UVC-492 / DMR-038: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with reverse at LDS and a light die crack North-South in hair at LDS; Stage D with reverse and obverse at VLDS. The four-stage progression from EDS through VLDS documents a die pair maintained well beyond typical service limits, with the light hair die crack at Stage C providing a mid-to-late attribution marker. The westward S displacement means the initial punch landed slightly east before correction. Struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1945-S represents the final year of wartime silver alloy at San Francisco.
