1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-033

Description

Thirty-third repunched mintmark cataloged by VarietyVista for the 1945 San Francisco Jefferson Nickel wartime silver alloy issue, RPM-033 shows an S/S West displacement on the large above-dome mintmark. Documented under UVC-485 and DMR-036, Stage C in late die state develops an extensive constellation of diagnostics: a new die scratch pattern running north-south on the reverse, die chips accumulating above the letters ER of LIBERTY, a die crack extending east-west through the upper hair, and another crack traversing across the bust. The 1945-S wartime nickel was struck in the emergency 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese alloy adopted to conserve nickel for military applications. The large S mintmark above Monticello's dome — the oversized format unique to 1942-1945 silver composition nickels — provided a prominent canvas where repunching creates visible displacement. The convergence of late die state features including chips, cracks, and new scratches alongside the primary westward RPM documents a die that served well beyond typical retirement thresholds before being pulled from production.
