1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-026

Description

RPM-026 on the 1945-S Jefferson Nickel — Wartime Silver Alloy is a repunched mintmark cataloged UVC-340 and DMR-028, designated S/S South. The 1942–1945 Wartime Nickels are 35% silver, with the large mintmark placed above Monticello on the reverse — a placement that makes southward repunching events readily visible against the Monticello design. RPM-026 shows a secondary S impression displaced to the south of the primary mintmark. Three die stages are documented: Stage A (EDS) is the earliest confirmed state, showing the clearest secondary impression; Stage B (MDS) reflects mid-die-state condition; Stage C (LDS) documents the final stage, with the secondary impression progressively reduced in definition. The southward ghost S is best confirmed on EDS examples where the lower secondary serif contours remain cleanly separated from the primary mintmark body. The 1945-S Wartime Nickel was struck at San Francisco in the last year of the 35% silver alloy program, making all 1945-S Wartime issues historically notable as the closing San Francisco examples of the series.
