Description
Struck at San Francisco during the final year of wartime silver alloy production, this 1945 Jefferson nickel carries RPM-025, a repunched mintmark showing as S/S with the secondary impression displaced to the west. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-339 and DMR-027, three die stages document this die pair's history. Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die state reveals numerous north-to-south die scratches on the reverse and an obverse also in mid-die state. Stage C in late die state is likewise unconfirmed. VarietyVista has noted that additional specimens are needed for new high-magnification color digital photography to fully document this variety. The westward displacement of the secondary S mintmark creates a doubled impression above Monticello's dome where the large wartime-era mintmark was hand-punched. The north-to-south reverse die scratches in Stage B provide useful confirmation of the die pairing even when the repunching itself is difficult to resolve. Wartime silver nickels remain actively pursued by variety collectors due to their unusual composition and distinctive mintmark placement.
