Description

The 1945-S Jefferson Nickel Wartime Silver Alloy RPM-024 is cataloged by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-338 and DMR-026. The mintmark displacement is S/S East, with the initial S punch applied to the west and the accepted mintmark repositioned eastward, leaving the secondary westward impression visible to the left of the primary. Stage B die markers include a die crack across the bust of Liberty's portrait and a die crack across the upper hair — two obverse die cracks that, taken together, confirm Stage B middle die state and assist in placing individual coins within the die-stage progression. The 1945-S Wartime Jefferson Nickel is struck in a 35% silver alloy, carrying the large oversize S mintmark above Monticello — the standard reverse configuration for San Francisco-mint wartime issues throughout the 1942–1945 production period. The 1945-S is one of the final wartime silver alloy Jefferson Nickels before the composition reverted to copper-nickel for 1946. East-direction repunches on the large S mintmark are readily detectable under low magnification, with the Stage B hair and bust cracks providing corroborating die-state attribution.
