1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-023

Description

Twenty-third repunched mintmark cataloged for the 1945-S Jefferson Nickel wartime silver alloy series, RPM-023 displays an S/S East displacement where the second punch landed to the right of the initial impression. Documented by VarietyVista under UVC-336 and DMR-024, four die stages trace the die's working life from Stage A through Stage D. The eastward displacement means the steel S punch shifted rightward between applications, creating a secondary serif pattern extending to the right of the primary letter. As the final year of the wartime composition, 1945-S nickels were struck in the 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese alloy adopted in 1942 to conserve nickel for military use. The large above-dome S mintmark unique to wartime issues provided an oversized canvas where even modest repunching produced visible overlapping impressions.
