1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-022

Description

The 1945-S Jefferson Nickel Wartime Silver Alloy RPM-022 is a repunched mintmark variety cataloged with die markers UVC-336 and DMR-024, documented across three die stages. Jefferson Nickels struck 1942–1945 used a 35% silver alloy (copper, silver, manganese) and carry a large S mintmark above the Monticello dome on the reverse — a placement that makes mintmark anomalies particularly visible under magnification. Stage A is early die state but unconfirmed. Stage B is mid-die state, also unconfirmed. Stage C, the late die state, carries two confirming die cracks: one develops from the right dome running south between Monticello pillars 3 and 4, and a separate crack appears in the upper hair of Jefferson's portrait on the obverse. The pillar 3–4 crack falls near the enlarged mintmark position, enabling simultaneous verification of the RPM and the die crack in a single field of view. The 1945-S was among the final wartime silver alloy Jefferson issues; silver alloy composition is confirmed by non-magnetic response. The Stage C die cracks provide strong late die state anchors when the mintmark repunch is worn.
