1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-011

Description

Recorded by VarietyVista, this 1945-S wartime silver Jefferson Nickel from the San Francisco Mint features heavy north-south die scratches on the obverse that appeared early in the die's life. Die markers UVC-324 / DMR-012: Stage A with reverse at EMDS and heavy N-S die scratches on obverse at MDS; Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with reverse at LDS and obverse at VLDS. The VLDS obverse designation indicates production well beyond typical service limits. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, Felix Schlag's design carries the oversized S above Monticello. The heavy obverse die scratches present from Stage A suggest damage before or very early in production, yet the die continued striking through VLDS.
