1945-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint wartime silver Jefferson Nickel RPM-004 tracks four progressive die states with distinctive reverse roof and dome markers. Die markers UVC-317 / DMR-005: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die gouge in the upper right roof at MDS and obverse at MDS; Stage C with reverse and obverse at LMDS; Stage D with a die crack from the top of dome southeast to dome window at LDS and a die crack southeast through upper hair at LDS. The Stage B roof die gouge provides an early-to-mid attribution marker, while the Stage D dome-to-window crack traces Monticello's architectural stress lines. Struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1945-S was the final year of wartime silver alloy production at the San Francisco Mint before the return to standard 75/25 copper-nickel composition in 1946.
