Description

Struck at the San Francisco Mint in the wartime silver alloy during the final year of that emergency composition, this VarietyVista-documented Jefferson Nickel carries extensive die state documentation across four stages. Die markers UVC-316 / DMR-004: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse at MDS and strong die scratches North-South on obverse at MDS; Stage C with reverse and obverse at LDS; Stage D with reverse at VLDS, a die crack across bust at VLDS, and a die crack Southeast through upper hair. The VLDS bust crack and hair crack document a die pair driven far beyond typical service life. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the oversized S above Monticello distinguishes the silver-content coins from standard copper-nickel issues produced before and after the war.
