1945-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint wartime silver Jefferson Nickel RPM-003 tracks four progressive die states with a distinctive combination of building cracks and obverse die scratches. Die markers UVC-264 / DMR-005: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse and obverse at MDS; Stage C with a light die crack from upper right building to rim at LMDS and numerous die scratches on obverse at LMDS; Stage D with reverse at LDS and a die crack from head to rim at K-11:45 at LDS. The K-11:45 clock-position crack reference provides precise directional attribution, placing the fracture at a nearly vertical trajectory northwest from Jefferson's head. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1945-D was the final Denver Mint production year for the wartime silver alloy before returning to standard copper-nickel in 1946.
