Description

Dual-listed under both CONECA DDO-005/RPM#2 and Wexler Variety ID 1945-D WDDO-001 through the attribution work of Brian A. Ribar, this Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class V pivoted hub doubling on LIBERTY, the five-pointed star, and the date. Class V pivoted doubling results from the hub rotating around a pivot point between impressions, creating a spread that fans outward from the pivot axis — the farther a design element sits from the pivot point, the greater the displacement it exhibits. What makes this variety especially compelling is its dual-variety status: the reverse die is an RPM listed as 1945-D 5c WRPM-002 (D/D South), meaning this single coin can exhibit both a doubled die obverse and a repunched mintmark — a combination that significantly enhances numismatic interest and market value. The obverse die also shows a die crack in Jefferson's hair at the top of the head extending to the rim, providing an additional attribution checkpoint. On the reverse, a die dot appears to the right of the small right window on Monticello. The 1945-D nickel was produced during the final year of the wartime silver alloy composition (56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese) before the Mint returned to the pre-war 75% copper, 25% nickel formula in 1946, and wartime nickels carry a large mintmark above Monticello's dome — making the D/D South RPM visible at the prominent above-dome position. The CONECA DDO-005 cross-reference confirms independent attribution by the Combined Organizations of Numismatic Error Collectors of America. Collectors should examine both the obverse doubling and the reverse mintmark under 7x magnification.
