1945-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-027

Description

Tracked by VarietyVista with die identifiers UVC-518 and DMR-058, the 1945-D RPM-027 is a repunched mintmark variety found on a 1945-D Jefferson Nickel from the Wartime Silver Alloy composition period. Three die stages document the working die's progression: Stage A at early die state (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die-state (MDS, unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (LDS, unconfirmed) — all three stages awaiting photographic confirmation of their die state characteristics. The 1945-D Jefferson Nickel is part of the Wartime Silver Alloy subseries, struck from mid-1942 through 1945 in a special composition of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese to conserve nickel for military applications during World War II. These wartime nickels weigh 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter, and they feature a distinctive large mintmark — P, D, or S — placed above the dome of Monticello on the reverse rather than in the standard position to the right of the building, making them immediately identifiable. Felix Schlag designed the obverse Jefferson portrait and the Monticello reverse. The large D mintmark above the Monticello dome on wartime nickels provides an especially prominent field for examining repunched mintmark evidence, as the oversized letter format reveals punch displacement more clearly than the smaller mintmarks used in standard pre-war and post-war production. Repunched mintmarks on wartime nickels document the challenges Mint engravers faced when adapting to the new, larger mintmark format and its unusual placement position on the reverse die, which was unfamiliar territory compared to the standard mintmark location used before and after the war.
