Description

Cataloged as RPM-001 (UVC-261, DMR-002), this 1945 Denver wartime Jefferson nickel shows the oversized D mintmark punched multiple times, displaced south and east (D/D/D South, East). The triple punching indicates at least three separate blows of the mintmark punch in slightly different positions. Three die stages are documented. Stage A represents early die state with no supplementary markers confirmed. Stage B places the reverse at mid-die-state while the obverse has already progressed to late die state, suggesting the obverse die was wearing faster than its reverse counterpart. By Stage C, the reverse reaches late die state, a die crack extends from Jefferson's head to the rim at the 12 o'clock position marking very late die state, and an east-to-west die crack runs through the hair. The accelerated obverse deterioration visible in Stage B is noteworthy because it indicates the two dies in this pairing had different service histories or hardness characteristics. Wartime nickels carried enlarged mintmarks for post-war silver recovery sorting, and the Denver D on these issues is among the most studied for repunching.
