1944 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

1944 WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1944 Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A counterclockwise (CCW) spread pivoting from about 10:00 appears on the date, the designer's initials, the lower queue, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. Master die doubling appears on Washington's lower ear and on the underside of the nose. On the obverse, a scratch following the rim crosses the lower parts of all four digits of the date, and a scratch heads east off the upper B in LIBERTY. On the reverse, where the eagle's inner and outer wing feathers meet, a scratch runs SSW. Whaden Curtis submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
