1944 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1944 WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1944 Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A clockwise (CW) spread pivoting from about 4:00 appears on QUARTER DOLLAR and UNITED STATES OF, and slightly on E PLURIBUS UNUM. The obverse is itself a doubled die, listed in the Wexler files as 1944 WDDO-001: a Class I clockwise (CW) spread appears on the date, the designer's initials, the lower queue, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, with master die doubling on Washington's lower ear and the underside of the nose. Its markers are a scratch heading ESE off the L in LIBERTY, starting at the lower right of its upright, and a gouge curving south off the 1 in the date from its center left. On the reverse, just below the branch, a scratch joins the leaves over the L and A of DOLLAR. Joe Feld submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 1-R-V. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
