Description

Holding the lead position for doubled die reverses on the 1944 Washington Quarter, WDDR-001 exhibits Class I clockwise spread — the strongest doubling classification, where the secondary hub impression rotates relative to the primary, creating separation that increases with distance from the pivot point. The clockwise spread affects multiple reverse elements: USA, QUARTER DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the lower leaves and branches. This breadth of doubling across legend, denomination, motto, and design elements indicates substantial rotational displacement during hubbing. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-V, cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1944 25-cent WDDR-001. Extensive die markers on both sides provide additional confirmation points. The 1944 Washington Quarter was struck during World War II in 90% silver at Philadelphia, where wartime demands generated numerous die pairs. As WDDR-001, this represents the most significant doubled die reverse for the date, carrying the strongest spread among all cataloged DDR entries for the 1944 quarter. A Class I CW spread shows on USA, QUARTER DOLLAR, EPU, and the lower leaves and branches.Die Markers: Obverse: Three parallel die scratches run NW to SE to the left of the 1st T in TRUST. Four nearly parallel die scratches run NW to SE near the rim at about 7:00. A die scratch runs SE from the lower right R of TRUST. Reverse: A strong die gouge extends SE from the bottom of the U in UNITED. Two short, strong die gouges extend SW from the center left 2nd S of STATES. A short die gouge extends SW from the bottom left O in OF. A heavy die scratch runs parallel to the bottom of the 1st L in DOLLAR.Submitted By: Tony RussoCross References: None known
