1944 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-038
Error
Description
Produced during World War II when Washington Quarters were struck in 90% silver composition, this 1944 Philadelphia DDO-038 displays strong extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the ribbon end, and the date, with a light rotational spread visible on the numeral 1 of the date. Attributed by VarietyVista with die classification UVC-0502 and marker reference DMR-048, the die was documented at Stage A where both obverse and reverse are in early die state, while Stages B and C remain unconfirmed. The broad distribution of doubling across multiple obverse elements indicates that the hub misalignment affected a wide area of the die face, impressing secondary images on both the lettering and design features simultaneously. The light rotational spread on the 1 suggests a slight angular component to the hub displacement. Wartime silver quarters from 1944 circulated heavily during and after the war, and most surviving examples show considerable wear that can obscure subtle doubled die characteristics. Collectors should examine well-preserved specimens under magnification, focusing on the bold legends where extra thickness is most readily detected.
