1944 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-035

Description

Cataloged as UVC-0491, DMR-045, this 1944 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter shows medium spread on LIBERTY and the ribbon end. Struck in 90% silver (0.1808 oz ASW), the 1944 quarter was produced in large quantities as wartime demand continued. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed); Stage B in Mid Die State, identified by heavy abrasion on the B of LIBERTY, a die gouge connecting the R and T of LIBERTY, and a die crack running down the eagle's right wing; and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The heavy abrasion on the B of LIBERTY in Stage B is a particularly distinctive marker, as this level of die surface damage is unusual and immediately recognizable under magnification. Philadelphia struck over 104 million quarters in 1944, continuing the elevated wartime production levels. DDO-035 sits among a large group of documented doubled die obverses for the 1944 date, with DMR-045 indicating its relative position within the discovery sequence.
