1944 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-032
Error
Description
The 1944 Washington Quarter DDO-032 is attributed by VarietyVista with die codes UVC-0408 and DMR-033, struck at Philadelphia in 90% silver. The doubling on the obverse produces a light spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date — a broad but moderate effect covering the major obverse legends. Three die stages are documented with notable reverse detail across stages. Stage A is an early die state (unconfirmed). Stage B at mid-die state shows the obverse advancing while two light die scratches develop from the arrow points to the eagle's right wing on the reverse — a crossover feature linking obverse die state to a specific reverse marker. Stage C at late die state brings two die cracks: one in Washington's upper hair on the obverse, and a second running down the eagle's right wing on the reverse. The right wing die crack in Stage C is a visually prominent late-state feature that appears as a raised line across the wing — its presence immediately signals Stage C or later. Collectors should focus first on the LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST spread to identify the doubled die, then confirm die stage using the Stage B arrow-to-wing scratches or Stage C wing and hair cracks.
