1944 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-031

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-031 (UVC-0407, DMR-032), this 1944 Washington quarter displays a light spread across LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date. Three die stages are documented. Stage A is the early-mid die state on the obverse, with strong die gouges through PLURIBUS on the reverse also appearing at the early-mid die state threshold. Stage B is provisionally mid-die state, unconfirmed. Stage C is the late die state, introducing a die crack across the forehead and hair, a die crack across the bust, and the reverse transitioning to late die state. The 1944 Washington quarter was struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint with a high mintage, reflecting wartime coin production demands. While the doubling on DDO-031 is described as light, the broad spread across the motto, LIBERTY, and the date gives attributors multiple reference points for identification. The strong die gouges through PLURIBUS noted in the Stage A reverse description serve as a reliable secondary marker when the obverse spread is difficult to read.
