1944 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-029
Error
Description
Twenty-ninth doubled die obverse for the 1944 Washington Silver Quarter, DDO-029 exhibits light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST with light rotational spread on RTY of LIBERTY. The rotational component of the spread — where RTY shows angular displacement while the motto shows linear displacement — suggests a combined pivot-and-shift mechanism during die hubbing, creating a complex doubling pattern across multiple design zones. Die markers UVC-0405 and DMR-030 document three die stages: Stage A at Early Die State (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B at Mid-Die State (MDS, unconfirmed), and Stage C where the obverse reaches Late Die State (LDS). The 1944 date falls squarely in the World War II era, when the Philadelphia Mint maintained silver quarter production alongside the dramatically altered cent and nickel programs. John Flanagan's Washington portrait, based on the Houdon bust, offered multiple areas where hub doubling could manifest — the fine lettering of the motto and LIBERTY being particularly responsive to revealing displacement. Twenty-nine documented DDOs for a single date demonstrates both the volume of wartime quarter production and the thoroughness of variety researchers. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDO-029 adds another entry to the extensive doubled die record for wartime Washington Quarter production.
