1944 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-010

Description

Tenth in the VarietyVista catalog of 1944 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter DDOs, documented under UVC-0386 and DMR-011. The doubling produces medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST with light spread on LIB of LIBERTY and the date. Four die states trace the die's life: Stage A is EDS but unconfirmed. Stage B shows both obverse and reverse at MDS. Stage C reaches LDS with a die crack across the bust, a light crack in the hair, and a die chip on the wing under U of UNITED. Stage D advances to VLDS with a light crack from lower 1 to upper 9 of the date, reverse also at VLDS. The progression through four states — from clean early dies to cracked and chipped very late specimens — provides an unusually complete die-life record. The 1944 Washington Quarter was struck during World War II in 90% silver composition. Ten documented DDOs for this date reflects intensive study of wartime production, where high-volume striking created conditions favorable to hub doubling.
