1944 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-008

Description

Compound hub doubling combining light clockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the 1 of the date with light counterclockwise spread on the lower RTY of LIBERTY characterizes DDO-008 on the 1944 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter. Struck in 90% silver, this variety exhibits two opposing rotational displacement directions on a single die, indicating that the working hub contacted the die at different angular orientations during successive hubbing impressions. Cataloged as UVC-0384 and DMR-009, die stage C documents the obverse at late die state with a die crack extending across the bust into the field in front of Washington's face. The CW spread on IGWT and the date creates secondary impressions displaced in one rotational direction, while the CCW spread on the lower RTY displaces these letters in the opposite sense. The die crack at Stage C traversing the bust into the forward field documents advanced structural failure.
