1944 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004

Description

Cataloged as UVC-0380, DMR-005, this 1944 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter exhibits medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed); Stage B in Mid Die State, showing two die scratches joining the upper portion of the 19 in the date with the reverse also in MDS; and Stage C in Late Die State, with a light die crack across the base of the bust and the reverse in LDS. Struck in 90% silver (0.1808 oz ASW) during the final full year of World War II, the 1944 quarter was produced at Philadelphia alongside wartime production demands. The medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY places DDO-004 among the more visible doubled die obverses for the 1944 date. Stage B specimens are particularly useful for attribution, as the distinctive die scratches connecting the digits of 19 serve as a definitive diagnostic beyond the primary doubling. The progression from Early through Late Die State shows this die saw extended service, with the base-of-bust crack in Stage C marking the final phase before retirement.
