1944-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

RPM-002 on the 1944-D Washington Quarter is a repunched mintmark cataloged UVC-0435 and DMR-016 by VarietyVista. The D mintmark on this 90% silver issue received two punch applications to the working die, leaving a secondary impression that defines the attribution. Three die stages document the variety's progression. Stage A and Stage B details are recorded in the die marker catalog. Stage C (LDS) develops two die cracks: one running across the eagle's right wing to the rim and through the left leg of the N in UNITED — a landmark reverse crack that links coins to this specific die state — and a second crack across the bust on the obverse. The Stage C die cracks are the most visually prominent diagnostic features on late-state RPM-002 coins, surviving with clarity even when the secondary mintmark impression has worn to near invisibility. Washington Quarters of 1932–1964 are 90% silver, and the 1944-D was struck at Denver during World War II. The eagle's-right-wing crack in Stage C provides a reverse feature accessible at lower magnification than the mintmark repunching itself.
