1944-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team under designation 1944-D 25-cent WDDO-003, this Denver Mint Washington quarter shows a close spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials JF (for John Flanagan), the upper edge of the knot in Washington's queue, and slight displacement in the letters of LIBERTY. An important attribution note accompanies this variety: the doubling visible on the lower ear, the nose, and the letters WE is part of the master die doubling present on all 1944 quarters from all three mints, not unique to this working die. The WDDO-003 designation captures the additional working die doubling that appears on top of the baseline master die spread, requiring attributors to distinguish between the two layers. Obverse die markers include a die gouge appearing as a dot below the earlobe, a die scratch running south from the R in TRUST, and a small die gouge dot above the right side of the W in WE. On the reverse, a die crack can be found on the eagle's beak. No other cross-references are currently known, though the Wexler comments note that reverse varieties should also be checked. The 1944-D quarter had a mintage of 14.6 million pieces from the Denver Mint during World War II production.
