Description
Rather than originating from a single working die, the doubling on this 1944 Denver Washington quarter traces back to the master die itself. Cataloged as 1944-D 25¢ WMDO-001 by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA MD-1-O-IV+VII, the Class IV and VII Master Die Doubling Obverse shows a northward spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials, and the 1 in the date, with light extra thickness on LIBERTY. Master die doubling also appears on the underside of the nose and Washington's lower ear. Die markers for this specific working die include a light crack across the base of the bust on the obverse, a short die gouge curving west from the upper left of the O in OF on the reverse, and a die scratch running west-northwest to east-southeast through the top of the mintmark. Submitted by Frank Baumann. Because this doubling was impressed into the master die, all 1944 quarters from Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco should display it, and consequently no premium value applies solely for the master die doubling. Individual working die markers will differ on each example, making die-specific attribution the true collecting challenge.
