1944-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

The 1944-D Washington Quarter RPM-001 is the primary listed repunched mintmark variety for this date, cataloged with die markers UVC-0434 and DMR-015 across three die stages. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver through 1964, and the 1944-D Denver Mint issue occurred during peak wartime production when Mint die handling was under considerable pressure. Stage A is early die state but unconfirmed. Stage B introduces three progressive die cracks: a crack from the wing to the rim through the IT of UNITED; a crack across the bust; and a light crack across the upper hair — all mid-die state. The clustering of these three Stage B die cracks on both obverse and reverse gives this variety an unusually rich set of mid-die state confirmation points. Stage C, late die state, is unconfirmed. The wing-to-rim crack through IT of UNITED is particularly diagnostic: finding it alongside the bust crack establishes die identity before the mintmark is examined. The 1944-D is widely available, making RPM-001 accessible at moderate cost.
