1943-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-018

Description

Cataloged as DDO-018 (UVC-0368, DMR-019), this 1943-S Washington quarter exhibits light spreading on IN GOD WE TRUST. Three die stages are documented. Stage A and Stage B are early and mid-die-state respectively, both unconfirmed for supplementary markers. Stage C reaches late die state with a die crack across the hair, a die crack across the bust that extends into the field in front and the queue behind, a crack down the eagle's right wing, and a crack from BUS of PLURIBUS to the wing. The bust crack's extension into the field on both sides of the portrait distinguishes Stage C of this die from other 1943-S DDO varieties. As a wartime silver quarter, the 1943-S carries both precious metal value and numismatic interest. The light IN GOD WE TRUST spread requires careful magnification to confirm, making the extensive Stage C crack network especially helpful for die identification.
