Description

Cataloged as UVC-0364, DMR-015, this 1943 San Francisco Mint Washington Quarter exhibits light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the 19 of the date. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B is MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C in LDS shows a die crack across the bust, a die crack down the eagle's right wing, and a die crack from the S of PLURIBUS to the wing. Struck in 90% silver at the San Francisco Mint during World War II, the 1943-S Washington Quarter comes from a year when San Francisco production supplemented Philadelphia and Denver output to meet wartime circulation demands. The late die state cracking pattern, with cracks developing across the bust and extending through the reverse, documents progressive die failure across the production run. DDO-014 is one of fifteen cataloged doubled die obverse varieties for the 1943-S date. The light spread on the motto and date requires careful examination to distinguish from machine doubling.
