1943-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-010
Error
Description
Medium spread on LIBERTY with a distinctive three-quarter vertical bar identifies DDO-010 for the 1943-S Washington Silver Quarter. John Flanagan's Washington portrait, with its ribbon-tied hair queue and strong facial profile, provides diagnostic surfaces where hub displacement creates visible spread on both inscriptions and portrait elements. Die tracking designations UVC-0360 and DMR-011 anchor the catalog entry. Three die stages span the working life: Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B at mid-die state is also unconfirmed, and Stage C reached late die state with a die crack running across the bust and another die crack across the hair, with the reverse remaining at MDS. San Francisco struck approximately 21.7 million quarters in 1943, a wartime production year when metal allocations and labor availability affected output. Ten documented DDOs for the 1943-S quarter indicates this date attracted significant variety research attention. The three-quarter vertical bar near LIBERTY provides a rapid visual diagnostic distinguishing DDO-010 from the other nine documented doubled die obverses. Cataloged by VarietyVista.
