1943-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
Cataloged as UVC-0353, DMR-004, this 1943 San Francisco Mint Washington Quarter shows light spread on LIBERTY and the ribbon end, with very light spread on IN GOD, TRU of TRUST, and the date. Struck in 90% silver (0.1808 oz ASW), the 1943-S was produced during the height of World War II at San Francisco, which operated at elevated production levels throughout the conflict. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed); Stage B in Mid Die State, identified by a light die crack across the base of the bust and a crack running down the eagle's right wing; and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The spread is strongest on LIBERTY and the ribbon end, with the IN GOD WE TRUST and date areas requiring closer examination to detect the secondary impressions. Stage B provides the most reliable attribution window, where the dual die cracks at the bust base and wing complement the primary doubling diagnostics. The 1943-S is one of the scarcer wartime San Francisco quarters, adding date-and-mint appeal to the die variety interest of DDO-003.
