1943-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

One of the more significant Washington Quarter doubled dies, the 1943-S DDO-001 exhibits very strong doubling spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and designer John Flanagan's initials — making it visible without high magnification on well-struck specimens. Designated FS-101 by Cherrypickers' Guide, this variety carries mainstream recognition that extends beyond the die variety specialty into general Washington Quarter collecting. The coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver during World War II, adding precious metal content to its variety appeal. Die stage documentation records three states: Stage A with an early die state obverse and mid-die state reverse; Stage B showing a mid-die state obverse with die cracks from the US of PLURIBUS to the wing and across the lower right wing to the leaf above the Q of QUARTER; and Stage C in a late die state (unconfirmed).
