1943 (S) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1943-S Washington quarter with very strong doubling on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date and the designer's initials. Both catalogs list it as Cherrypickers FS-101; Wexler writes it FS-25-1943S-101 (017). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records an extremely strong clockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date, on the nose and the designer's initials, and on the lower queue and LIBERTY. On the obverse a crack heads east over the upper forehead into the hair, another crosses the bottom of the bust, and a north-south scratch lies in the field left of the lips and chin; nothing is noted on the reverse. Jim Lafferty submitted it. CONECA lists it as 1-O-I and Breen as #4319. VarietyVista gives the reporter as unknown. Under UVC-0351 and DMR-002, stage A has the obverse in an early state and the reverse in a middle one. Stage B has the obverse middle, a crack from US of PLURIBUS to the wing (late-middle), and a crack across the lower right wing to the leaf above the Q of QUARTER. A late stage C is unconfirmed.
