1942-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-009

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1942 San Francisco Washington Quarter features an S/S South displacement using MMS-002, the Trumpet Tail S punch with its flared lower terminal. Die markers UVC-0697 / DMR-015: Stage A EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B MDS with reverse at MDS and a light die crack across the upper hair and forehead on the obverse; Stage C LDS (unconfirmed). The die crack spanning hair and forehead at Stage B documents an obverse structural failure traversing two distinct design zones. Flanagan's design was struck at San Francisco in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm. The 1942-S was produced during the first full year of American involvement in World War II. The Trumpet Tail identification (MMS-002) adds tooling provenance to the positional data, tracking which physical S punch was in service. S/S South. MMS-002 (Trumpet Tail).
