Description

Second cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1942-S Washington Quarter, DDR-002 presents a light spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA paired with the Trumpet Tail mintmark style (MMS-002). VarietyVista assigns die markers UVC-0277 and DMR-005, with three documented die stages: Stage A at Early-Mid Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State, and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). The Trumpet Tail designation describes the S mintmark's distinctive flared serif, where the terminal strokes of the letter broaden into trumpet-shaped extensions — a characteristic of a specific mintmark punch used at San Francisco during this period. The light spread on the reverse legend resulted from a secondary hub impression during die preparation. Struck during the early months of American involvement in World War II, the 1942-S Washington Quarter was produced at San Francisco in 90% silver at 24.3mm. John Flanagan's design, featuring Washington's profile on the obverse and an eagle with spread wings on the reverse, was in its tenth year of production. Examine UNITED STATES OF AMERICA for the light doubled spread, and inspect the S mintmark for the flared trumpet tail serifs characteristic of MMS-002.
