Description
The 1942 Washington quarter was struck during World War II. Unlike the nickel denomination, which was changed to a silver-manganese alloy to conserve nickel for the war effort, the quarter retained its standard 90% silver composition throughout the conflict. Wartime demand for coinage was high as the expanding economy and military payrolls required vast quantities of circulating coins. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this issue is identified by the S mint mark on the reverse beneath the eagle's tail feathers. The coin is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.3mm and a reeded edge.
Rarity Notes
Mintage of 19,384,000 pieces. Common in circulated grades. Uncirculated examples are available but high-grade gems are scarcer due to bag marks and handling during the silver era.
