1942 (S) Washington Quarter - Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Cataloged as UVC-0282 and DMR-010 with the MMS-002 Trumpet Tail mintmark style, the 1942-S Washington Quarter RPM-005 shows an S/S West repunched mintmark. Attributed by VarietyVista, this variety progresses through four die states tracing deterioration during World War II-era production at San Francisco. Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B reveals a die gouge through the lower portion of TER in QUARTER at early-to-mid die state on both sides. Stage C advances with a light die crack descending down the eagle's right wing at mid-die state, joined by a light crack on the upper forehead of the obverse portrait. Stage D in late die state remains unconfirmed. The Trumpet Tail mintmark designation refers to the specific S punch style, where the bottom of the letter flares outward in a characteristic trumpet shape — a detail that helps attributors confirm the correct punch variety. The 1942-S quarter carried a modest mintage compared to Philadelphia and Denver, and documented repunched mintmark varieties from this early wartime year are valued by Washington Quarter specialists.
