1942-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

The D mintmark on this 1942 Denver Jefferson nickel was punched over a horizontal D — a dramatic 90-degree rotation between the primary and secondary impressions — making it one of the most visually striking RPM varieties in the Jefferson nickel series. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-041 and DMR-002. This is FS-501, a Fivaz-Stanton listed variety recognized across major attribution services. Stage A shows both the reverse and obverse in early die state. The 1942-D Jefferson nickel was struck in standard 75% copper and 25% nickel alloy — the regular composition for this date. The wartime 35% silver alloy began mid-1942, applied only to Philadelphia pieces carrying a large P above Monticello, and never applied to 1942-D Denver production. The D mintmark on standard-composition 1942 nickels sits at the right side of Monticello on the reverse. The D/Horizontal D impression angle gives this RPM immediate visual impact under low magnification and places it among the most collectible varieties in the pre-war Jefferson nickel census.
