1942-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Exhibiting combined Class II and Class VI hub doubling — both distorted and distended — this 1942-D Jefferson Nickel carries a visually striking doubled die reverse. The D-mint 1942 Jefferson Nickel retains the standard 75% copper/25% nickel composition; the wartime silver alloy was adopted only for Philadelphia and San Francisco issues later in 1942, never for Denver. A strong Class II spread appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, increasing left to right. The doubling also affects CENTS and the right side of the building, with extra thickness on LLO of MONTICELLO. On the obverse, a die gouge through 19 of the date provides an immediate attribution marker. Reverse diagnostics include a short die scratch below the right crossbar of the second T in STATES and a short diagonal die scratch between the lower portions of AM in AMERICA. The dual-class nature reflects a complex hubbing sequence where the hub both rotated and tilted between impressions, producing effects distinct under magnification.
