1941 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005 / DDO-006

Description

DDO-006, which Wexler numbers WDDO-005, is a doubled die obverse on the 1941 Washington quarter with strong doubling on the date, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. Both catalogs list it as Cherrypickers FS-102; Wexler writes it FS-25-1941-102 (012.9). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a very strong Class I counterclockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, LIBERTY and the lower ribbon. On the obverse an east-west crack crosses the bottom of the bust and another heads east across the hair over the forehead and continues over the top of the head. On the reverse there is a crack on the eagle's upper right wing and one heading east across the lower part of the eagle's head. Kevin Flynn submitted it. CONECA lists it as 6-O-I and Breen as #4304. VarietyVista credits Ed Raser. Under UVC-0158 and DMR-008, an early stage A is unconfirmed and stage B has both sides in a middle state. Stage C shows a light crack in the upper hair (late-middle) and a light crack across the bust, with the reverse also late-middle. In stage D both sides are in a late die state.
