1941 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Recognized as the primary doubled die obverse for the 1941 Washington quarter, WDDO-001 exhibits a strong spread towards the center on LIBERTY, the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, and on the queue of Washington's hair. The Wexler Team cataloged this variety under ID 1941 25¢ WDDO-001, with cross-references to CONECA 4-O-II and Cherrypickers FS-25-1941-103. Obverse die markers include a die crack running east-west across the base of the bust extending into the field, a short die scratch running south-southwest from the lower left of the B in LIBERTY, and a die crack running west-southwest to east-northeast through the hair at the top of the head. The reverse shows a die gouge running west from the upper E in UNITED, a light die crack through the lower UN of UNUM, a light die crack running west-southwest from the eagle's beak, and a die crack descending the eagle's right wing. Submitted by Jim Lafferty, this variety is among the strongest doubled dies in the pre-war Washington quarter series and is listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide.
