Description

Completing a three-direction spread across the 1941-S RPM varieties using the MMS-002 punch, RPM-004 displaces the secondary S to the east. While RPM-002 shifted west and RPM-003 shifted north, this fourth variety documents eastward misplacement, demonstrating that the MMS-002 punch produced repunching in at least three distinct directions across different working dies. An eastward shift typically manifests as extra width on the right side of the S or a faint secondary curve extending beyond the right edges of the primary letter. Three consecutive RPM entries sharing the MMS-002 designation suggests San Francisco was using a single S punch across its 1941 dime production, and directional variation arose solely from human positioning differences during die preparation. Weinman's design had been in continuous production for twenty-five years by 1941, and San Francisco — established during the Gold Rush in 1854 — was one of three mints producing dimes that year. Struck in 90% silver at 17.9mm and 2.50 grams. Examine the right edges of the S for the eastward-displaced secondary impression.
