Description
Listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-501, the 1941-S Mercury Dime RPM-001 displays a repunched S mint mark with the initial impression displaced to the northwest (S/S Northwest). The mint mark style is classified as MMS-002, one of the standard S punch sizes used at the San Francisco Mint during the Mercury Dime era. Repunched mint marks from the early 1940s Mercury Dime production reflect the hand-punched application process where each working die received its mint mark individually using a hand-held punch and mallet — a technique inherently prone to slight misalignment between impressions. The northwest displacement means the first S was placed slightly above and to the left of the final position, and under magnification the shadow of this initial impression is visible as a faint secondary image offset from the primary mint mark. The Cherrypickers' listing confirms this as a variety worth searching for, and the Mercury Dime's relatively small S mint mark makes careful examination under at least 10x magnification advisable.
