Description

Where RPM-002 displaced the secondary S to the west, RPM-003 of the 1941-S Mercury Dime shifts it northward — the earlier impression sits above the final mintmark, producing doubling at the top of the letter. Both varieties share the MMS-002 mintmark style, confirming they were punched using the same physical S punch despite different misalignment directions. This pairing illustrates that the punch itself is a constant while the human hand introduces variable positioning errors in every direction. The MMS-002 form is identified by specific characteristics of the S — serif shape, curve proportions, and dimensions — consistent regardless of repunching direction. As the third RPM for the 1941-S, this variety occupies a middle position in the San Francisco census for the date. The Mercury Dime's reverse places the mintmark in a confined space beside the fasces, making precise punch placement especially challenging. Struck in 90% silver at 2.50 grams and 17.9mm. Look for the secondary S protruding above the top curve of the primary mintmark to confirm attribution.
